Wind Farm Tours - Brighton

The voyage had begun, and had begun happily with a soft blue sky, and a calm sea.

by Vigina Woolf – The Voyage Out

The Rampion wind farm was approved for development by the government in June 2014 and work commenced in July 2015. It took a little under 3 years before the project was complete and producing energy at a total cost of approximately £1.3bn. Originally proposed to have 175 turbines, the project ended up with just 116, estimated to produce more than 1,366,560,000KWh per year. That is enough energy to power over 350,000 homes for a whole year.

The wind farm is located a little over 8 miles off the Brighton shoreline and covers more than 44 square miles of the sea. To put that into perspective, that is larger than the surface area of Guersey!
